Yoga

Yoga is an ancient philosophical discipline harmonising the body, mind and spirit. However, the practice of Yoga is very personal to the person participating. For some it is spiritual and emotional, for others, it is purely physical and for many it is a combination of the two, allowing our inner self (our spirit) to unite with our physical body…the word “Yoga” is classically translated as “union”.

There are many types of Yoga from Ashtanga (a more physical flowing strengthening style developed by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois) to Hatha ( "ha" meaning “sun” and "tha" meaning “moon"), a more relaxed and gentle style which focuses on training the body through postures (asanas), and the mind through concentration (dharana.) Breathing techniques (pranayama) are used as a tool to harness energy and focus attention.

Hatha Yoga cleanses and strengthens the body, deepens internal awareness, and promotes clarity and relaxation. And then there are contemporary styles of Yoga such as Freestyle Fitness Yoga with the focus on movement, breathing, transitions from one posture to another and progression. Extreme postures such as headstands (Sirshasana) and The Fish (Matsyasana) that exceed optimal ranges of motion are avoided in favour of those promoting individual strengths and performance. Every posture is validated from a fitness perspective, a flowing and energizing workout without the spiritual angle or use of Sanskrit terms.
